Prompt - Donnybrook [noun]: a melee; a free-for-all

————

A thrill of energy ran through Randvi as she ducked under Rollo’s swing. The revelry had broken down into quite the donnybrook, as she had heard one of the locals call it. So far no one was fighting like they really meant it. They were nearly all completely drunk, too. Rollo made another swing and Randvi stepped out of his range easily. Then she stepped back in quickly and slapped him soundly across the face. The connection was sharp, and the crack sound of it matched the sting that spread through her hand. The shock in his eyes was beautiful.

Word Count: 100        Herra Brosca / Leliana

Herra: Maker’s breath! Leli! What are you doing?
Leliana: Herra? What’s wrong?
Herra: Get out of there! Are you stuck?
Leliana: I’m just going for a little swim.
Herra: A what?
Leliana: A swim?
Herra: I don’t know what that is. Get out before you sink!
Leliana: Do I look like I’m sinking?
Herra: No, but-
Leliana: You could come in with me. The water is lovely.
Herra: I can’t.
Leliana: It’s really nice in here.
Herra: I can’t swim.
Leliana: I could teach you?
Leliana: Or not. You don’t have to.
Herra: I’ll just watch. Just in case.
Leliana: Okay.
Herra: Just- Hey! Hey! Leliana! Come back!
Herra: Don’t do that!
Leliana: I was just getting my hair wet!

Prompt - Judicious [adjective]: having or exhibiting sound judgment; prudent

————

Samantha leaned forward, studying the holographic table in front of her. It was not looking good for her, but it was not hopeless yet. When was the last time she had been in a game this tense? It had been a while. Kepesh-Yakshi games tended toward either quick, one-sided affairs or long, protracted evenly matched battles. But in arcades like this, she usually outmatched most of her opponents easily. This was a surprise and delight, and required a more judicious approach. Her skin tingled in anticipation of a shock she knew could come at any moment. She loved this game.

Prompt - Pursue [verb]: follow (someone or something) in order to catch or attack them; (of a person or way) continue to proceed along (a path or route)

————

The trees started to blend together as Petra picked her way through the slick mud. Just ahead of her were fresh wet tracks through the muck, and the deer that left them was walking poorly. One of the prints was dragging, indicating injury. With her bow ready in hand she crept as quietly as possibly through the shrubs toward the clearing ahead. It had been an hour since she stumbled upon these tracks by luck. Whatever injury the deer had, it was only slowing it down a little. Petra would find it though, and spare the animal a slow death.

Prompt - Vanish [verb]: disappear suddenly and completely; gradually cease to exist

————

The air here was so different from anything she had encountered before. Something about it called to her. The Living Lands themselves pulled at something deep inside of her. It had been so unsettling when she first arrived. The way the air and water and land seemed to embrace the soul inside of her. Like nothing she had ever felt before. It created a hunger inside of her, a yearning. To vanish. To slip between the choking vines, among the shambling dreamscourge. Something she could not name told her the Living Lands would accept her where it violently rebuffed others.

Prompt - Factor [noun]: one that actively contributes to the production of a result

————

There was something she was missing. Rana studied the connections she had established, but the whole of it was not adding up. There was a factor she had not found or accounted for. None of the parties in this conspiracy she was unraveling were acting the way she would have expected. Nor did they seem to be motivated by the standard reasons. Greed, jealousy, envy, power, even revenge. Those were all to be expected. But they were all shockingly absent here. A cohesive conspiracy of seemingly random people, all acting on unknown motives. Just what was happening in her city?

Prompt - Adoption [noun]: the action of legally adopting another’s child, or the fact of being adopted; the action or fact of choose to take up, follow, or use something

————

The steps to her small home were strewn with bright bits of ribbon, torn pieces of paper, scattered and mixed with the detritus of the broken city. But she had survived again, the city and the High Harper both. Together. Now she was coming home. It would take time to find the children, but she would. The door opened slowly and little soldier Fig’s face poked out. The surprise on their faces made the two look actually look related. Fig gave a shout back into the house and then ran out onto the steps to wrap her arms around Jaheira.

Hawke: Andraste’s ass!
Merrill: What?
Hawke: Why are you so cold?
Merrill: I’m not.
Hawke: You’re like ice. Move your feet.
Merrill: But you’re so warm.
Hawke: I’m not warm! You’ve just got the temperature of a icicle.
Merrill: Hawke-
Hawke: Don’t "Hawke" me. You’re freezing!
Merrill: Mythal’enaste, Hawke. You’re being a bit dramatic.
Hawke: Am not.
Hawke: Thank you.
10 seconds later
Hawke: Ah! Merrill!
Merrill: [giggling]
Hawke: It’s not funny!
Merrill: You don’t think so?
Hawke: I’m going to go sleep with Beast.
Merrill: Oh please don’t. He smells awful.
Hawke: What? No he doesn’t!
Merrill: I love him, Hawke, but he smells dreadful.
Hawke: He smells fine.
Merrill: He smells like… halla dung.
Hawke: I can’t believe you’d say that.

Prompt - Brook [verb]: to put up with; tolerate

————

The sailor shrieked as Isabela bent his fingers until they broke with a sickening pop. She would not brook her sailors putting hands on anyone. To make a reach for Bethany? He was lucky all she broke were his fingers. Without even an uttered command, several other sailors rushed up and bustled the shouting man off the ship to the dock. Isabela turned and found Bethany smiling at her. It was always a surprise when Bethany smiled at her like that. It wasn’t lust, she knew what to do with lust. It was pride, trust. It looked dangerously like love.

Prompt - Huck [verb]: to throw or toss

————

“You can’t just huck it,” she corrected gently. Adaia’s long fingers, calloused from work but soft in application, easily covered her daughter’s small hand on the thin handle of the blade. With practiced ease she guided those little fingers into the right position, the best grip. There was tension in her tiny body, but Adaia felt it slipping away as Isene relaxed against her chest. It was a precious feeling, incongruous with the brutality of teaching a child to throw knives. Of needing to teach a child to kill.

“You’ve got to be careful, thoughtful. You’ll get there with practice.”

Prompt - Cheat [verb]: act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination

————

Her temper was bubbling dangerously below the surface as the vendor smugly quoted his price. It was ridiculous. He was a cheat and a liar. Rica could remember the way he had spoken to her the first time. When all he saw was her brand. Being uplifted into the noble caste was not a solution to all her problems, it would seem. He would not dare if Bhelen were alive. She still had some options though. It gave her a bit of satisfaction to see the superiority in his eyes fade as she shrugged and stepped back from his stall.

Prompt - Vegetation [noun]: plants considered collectively, especially those found in a particular area or habitat

————

The warm humid air felt nice on her skin, as did the heat of the sun’s rays soaking into her. Despite being a different planet, in a different system, almost a galaxy away, this felt almost like home. Perhaps all islands shared certain features. Even the vegetation was similar. Vibrant plants with broad leaves, thick, healthy. Pushing upward from sandy soil, clinging to steep mountain sides. Brilliant flowers, bright as a painting, flourished everywhere. That any place had survived the devastation of the Reapers was a miracle. To be a place that felt so much like home was… beyond definition.

Prompt - Dispirited [adjective]: affected or marked by low spirits; dejected

————

Weeks blended into months. Days passed unnoticed, and hours slipped away like seconds. When she was not walking the smooth stone cobblestones outside the Gallows, weeping and begging for anyone to let her see her precious Ellendre, she was here. At home. In the soft rocking chair of her children’s nursery, Ellendre’s favorite doll sat limply in her lap. Dispirited, lifeless. When her energy ran out, her family would usher her home and corral her here. Until what little life she could muster drove her back to the streets. Losing Ellendre was too much. The one joy in her life.

Prompt - Insult [verb]: to make an attack on

————

Kassandra smirked as the drunk man began to shout. His face reddened and swelled with outrage. The insult had hit the mark better than she could have hoped. She leaned away as he continued to scream at her, arms folded nonchalantly over her chest. Sometimes it was just too easy to bait people. Maybe she should not enjoy it, but a little good wordplay was something to be savored. He lunged toward her and she stepped aside, letting him slam into the wall. When he slumped to the ground she dragged him outside. Easiest coin she had made all week.

Prompt - Belong [verb]: to be suitable, appropriate, or advantageous

————

There was an unsettling feeling in the atmosphere on Sundermount. Ashalle had inspected every inch of their camp, hoping to find the source of whatever it was disturbing her. She had found nothing. But there was something wrong. The Keeper stated that Sundermount had a long and important history to their people, but it felt wrong to her. They did not belong here. As bad as things were in Ferelden, coming here felt like a mistake. It prickled at her skin, as if the mountain itself was malevolent. Sundermount did not want them. How would Serona ever find them here?

Prompt - Book [noun]: a set of written sheets of skin or paper or tables of wood or ivory; a set of written, printed, or blank sheets bound together between a front and back cover

————

The paper was smooth beneath her fingertips, just the barest hint of texture. A whisper of subtle change as she passed over the delicately printed letters. Even without reading it, the words on the page were intimately familiar to her. She had read it a hundred times before. A favorite she had carried to Montsimmard from Ostwick as a child - a frivolous adventure tale of noble knights, dragons, and brigands. The very sort of tale she would scoff at if others mentioned. Yet the familiarity of it remained a constant comfort. Especially now, with the world tearing itself apart. Again.

Prompt - Approach: [verb] to draw closer to; to come very near to, to be almost the same as; to make advances to, especially in order to create a desired result

————

The low, gradual slope of the Antivan rooftop was easily to balance on. Not like the steep roofs of Ferelden. As much as he did not want to be here there was a comfort in that old familiarity. House Arainai’s massive estate was unchanged since he last saw it, which made his approach easy to plan. Running from the Crows was not working anymore. The only places left to run were places he was not willing to go. Ferelden’s weather was bad enough, he was not going to hide in the Anderfels. Which meant cutting the head off the snake.

Prompt - Pleasantry [noun]: a humorous remark or act; a jest

————

There was always a certain tension when he moved through crowds like this. It was his job to move without notice. Not unseen, but unremarkable, unnoticed. Someone no one would remember seeing. Drell were not particularly common however. It was ingrained now, so that he fell back on the long-practiced behaviors even when he was not working. Move with the crowd, yield when challenged, a quick pleasantry. The unassuming nature of every average person just trying to get where they were going with the least trouble. They did not carry the shadows of trouble with them the way he did.

Prompt - Natural [adjective]: of or in agreement with the character or makeup of, or circumstances surrounding, someone or something

————

The air was thick and warm with the smell of cinnamon, vanilla, and almond. Something inside of her, something innate, long dead from neglect bloomed to life again. The warmth of the sugar and spices seeped inside of her, filling her back up with a piece of home she had almost forgotten. Memories of sweet rolls, cakes, and cookies filled her mind. Her mother covered in flour up to her elbows. Her own face and fingers sticky with stolen treats. There was a natural attraction to the unfamiliar little house that radiated with the joy of fresh baked goods. Home.

Prompt - Prayer [noun]: an address (such as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought

————

It did not feel right as Leliana settled her knees on the leather-wrapped bar on the back of the pew. She was not a person who belonged in a Chantry, offering up prayers to the Maker. After the things she had done. She closed her eyes, and began to whisper what words of the Chant she could remember. There was a part of her pride that kicked back against it. Yet, it had been a Revered Mother who saved her, an agent of His will. What bolder sign could there ever be that she was called to the Maker’s Light?
