Oren laughed, swinging his sword-stick wildly. The first few swings missed, but then it cracked hard against Jaine’s hip. He crowed with victory and waved the stick in celebration. Jaine winced at the sharp strike, but the exaggerated snarl and recoil was all for show.

“Get out, darkspawn!” Oren shouted. Fergie gave a fierce bark of menacing support. “Ser Oren will defend Highever!”

Oren threw himself on her, bringing them both down onto the rough courtyard dirt where he began to pummel her. Jaine let him, only protecting her face. Fergie jumped in to aggressively lick both of their faces.
